So yesterday we posted a link to a version of the 2.0 iPhone firmware which was supposedly the release version of the new system software. After getting weirded out by some buggy behavior, then discovering that there were number differences between our version and the version shipping with new iPhone 3Gs, we got a little suspicious. Today, we noticed that the file which Apple made available for upgraders via iTunes sported a slimmer file size and separate designation (1,1 as opposed to the 1,2 of the previous iteration). The new version (supposedly the “official” version) is now available from Apple’s servers — so if you had any misgivings about that initial update, you can snag this and get a do-over. We’ve updated and restored on our phone, and we’ll be honest — it does seem a little bit snappier. Hit the read link for the file, and let us know if you notice any differences.

The App Store is live, and we’re taking a peek around before it implodes from curious users trying to download dozens of apps for their iPhones and iPods touch (or is that iPod touches?).
Already users can start downloading their programs (which are downloaded to their /Users/[user]/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ directory as .ipa files), but you can’t do anything with them until you get the 2.0 firmware (or an iPhone 3G).
So far everything is really smooth and easy to use, although it’s easy to tell that the enormous amount of applications that will be available in the coming months (and years) will become a difficult thing to trudge through. It’s a high-class problem for Apple, but hopefully it won’t be too overwhelming to find something good if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for.
We’ll be keeping tally of some of the more noteworthy launch apps, although many we’ve already seen, and we’re updating as we go. Take a look at a few after the break!

A leaky update faucet let in-the-know users get in on this one a little early, but HTC’s now ready to trumpet its official Windows Mobile 6.1 update for its TyTN II to the world. Besides 6.1, the new release packs in the “display performance update” promised some time ago to help put a cap on the cursing and fist-shaking being displayed by owners of various HTC devices lately — but as we understand it, this isn’t a true driver, so don’t expect miracles. AT&T Tilt folks who want to play it straight will have to wait some undefined additional period of time for their carrier to get its act together and release the update, but their European comrades can head on over to HTC’s site now and kick off the download.

For the legions of developers anxious to use their talents to build for Palm (yes, all four of you), listen up. By partnering with DeviceAnywhere, Palm has opened up its Virtual Developer Lab, which enables devs to remotely access actual Treo / Centro handsets in order to test out software, capture screen shots / video of processes, create an audit trail through the capturing of keystrokes and share data / collaborate with colleagues online. If you’re swearing up and down that this stuff isn’t new, you’re not (entirely) crazy — DeviceAnywhere has been offering up this remote demo access on a variety of handsets for quite some time. Palm’s just making the extra effort to ensure you and your three pals know about it.

It’s been a solid tick since the North American N95, also referred to as the N95-3, received a software update. For those clamoring for a little love from Nokia’s dev team, listen up: an administrator over at the outfit’s forums has admitted that the Software Update crew has a new version in the works. We’re told that they’ve heard the demands for a fresh release, and they’re toiling away in order to bring it to N95-3 owners by early June. Unfortunately, we’re not told what new features we can expect, and even worse, “early June” seems like eons away, doesn’t it?

April Fool’s day joke? Could be,
but we’re hearing it might be real: the long standing bastions of iPhone hacking, the
iPhone Dev Team, posted a note to their site stating that “[today] the DevTeam was approached by an unnamed party to sell all of the intellectual property and related applications. After much consideration [What, hours? -
Ed.] the offer was accepted and the [Dev Team] has ceased.” Seems a bit outlandish. For those not in the know, the Dev Team is the same group that posted jailbreaks to
2.0 (before it was out),
1.1.3,
1.1.1, developed the
AnySIM unlock, and are thiiiis close to releasing the
Pwnage tool (which promised total unsigned firmware control of the iPhone). So yeah, it may well be a prank, we wouldn’t put it past them. Funny thing about the hacker community though, one goes down and 10 more spring up.
[Thanks Andrew, Erica]
Update: Yep, it’s an April Fool’s joke. We’re just going to go offline until April 2nd, peace.

Looks like Apple’s been passing around a new working version of the iPhone 2.0 beta firmware — not too many changes since the last release we saw, though. So far, from what we can tell the build is now officially 2.0 (before it was registered as 1.2), the Cisco VPN settings got some tweaks, and the root-level mail / ActiveSync settings have been reshuffled a bit. We’ll let you know if anything else pops up.
Update: Oh hey, Safari apparently has a YouTube plugin now!

We know Apple’s had its Inkwell handwriting recognition software in OS X for years now, so we might have otherwise just totally glossed over this Handwriting Recognition Engineer job listing on Apple’s site. Except for the part that reads: “The recognition technology you create may extend beyond Mac OS X to other applications and the iPhone.” They always love to throw those little tidbits in there, don’t they?

9:26AM - It’s minglin’ time! The space usually reserved for product demos is hollowed out for the Apple Continental Breakfast today, tons of journos and execs hanging out before the keynote kicks off.

With seven days left in the month to announce the iPhone SDK, BusinessWeek is reporting that a reliable source has it that Apple will be delaying officially sanctioned 3rd party apps, making it late by between one to three weeks. Yes, it would absolutely suck — but there’s always Ziphone.
